CULTURA E INGLÉS LA COMBINACIÓN DEFINITIVA
The important American port city can be found with its diverse architecture along the Buffalo Bayou in Texas. With the land for the city being purchased in 1836 by Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen, the intent for the creation of the city was to maintain a hub for transportation and commerce. The city was officially incorporated in 1837. Nowadays, it is still an extremely important transportation center and is one of the most populated cities in the entire United States.
The history of the city itself is quite interesting, as it depended on various economies throughout the years. Initially important due to the transportation of cotton, the city ended up changing over to a more petroleum-based economy, and finally (more recently) to medical/biotechnology. The city is home to the Texas Medical Center, NASA´s Johnson Space Center, and most importantly the deep-water Port of Houston that has been crucial to the transportation of goods (being number one in the United States for international waterborne cargo transported in and out of the country!).
An interesting fact is that the city experienced a population boom in the 1950’s due to the introduction of air conditioning! Many companies relocated their headquarters to the city with the city itself experiencing an economic shift toward energy-related commerce and products.
A city with a rich and colorful history, Houston is still as strong and booming as it has always been.
